NHL star coaches Mass. HS team to state title game at TD Garden [Video]

March is usually quiet in the small Cape Cod town of Orleans, Massachusetts, but the Charles Moore Arena is an exception. The Nauset Regional boys hockey team were 18-1-and-1 in the regular season, and worked their way up to the Division 3 Final at TD Garden. It exceeded my expectations quite a bit its a lot more fun than I thought it would be, said goalie Zach Coelo.Senior defenseman Joe McManus said the coaches are what makes the team experience as good as it is.I think our coaches are phenomenal. I attribute a lot of our wins to our coaching. They know exactly what to do each practice, he said.Head coach Connor Brickley has the experience under his belt to back up his players claim. Originally from Everett, Brickley played in the NHL for the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. The kids really want to be challenged, Brickley said. They want to be challenged in practice, they want to be challenged in games, and they want to be the best version of themselves.Hes a really good coach. He tells us a lot of things about hockey that we didnt know and teaches us every day, said junior center Colin Ward.Brickley returned to the Cape after COVID-19 lockdowns halted his professional career in Europe. He started by running clinics for kids in the area before the opportunity to coach high school opened up.I was able to get my brother Brendan and Coach Alcott, both police officers down here, but they are both great high school coaches,Brickley said. Theyre very passionate about the game, theyre very demanding on the players. They have great structure and organizational skills that the kids really feed off of.Brickleys NHL background has its benefits, too. Street cred, professionalism and chirps have resonated with his players. In practice, whenever he scores on me, he goes Welcome to the nationals, buddy, or something like that. Always throws little chirps at me; thats fun, Coelo said.Though they came up one goal short of a championship, the team still finds fun in every game they play, making for an unforgettable season.I really think this group is really tight, McManus said. I think that factors into how everyone gets along on the ice, the plays that we make.Being with all my friends, pretty much, I mean, thats it, Coelo said. I love these guys.Recent High 5 story:
