Jeffrey Donaldson faces 11 charges including rape | Newstalk [Video]

The charges against former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson have been revealed for the first time.Sunday Life reported the 61-year-old politician faces 11 historical sexual offence charges including rape. His wife Eleanor Donaldson is charged with aiding and abetting additional offences in relation to her husband’s case. The charges against the pair will be formally put to them when the case is heard at Newry Magistrates Court for the first time on April 24th.Belfast-based journalist Amanda Ferguson told Newstalk Breakfast, however, the charges remain“a legally sensitive topic”.“There may be some changes to the charge sheet,” she said.“An official breakdown hasn’t been provided yet – you wouldn’t usually get that until the first court appearance.“It’s possible that the PPS makes adjustments to the charges that Jeffrey Donaldson faces.”Following the charges, Mr Donaldson resigned as DUP leader on March 29th. Deputy DUP leader Gavin Robinson was appointed interim leader.Mr Donaldson is Northern Ireland’s longest-standing MP, first elected in 1997, and had been the DUP’s leader in the UK House of Commons since 2019.It is understood he will contest the charges against him, but Ms Ferguson said “the political ramifications of what’s unfolded over the Easter week are being felt to this day”.The DUP following Mr DonaldsonThe North South Ministerial Council will take place in Armagh today as ministers from both sides of the Irish border meet to discuss ongoing cooperation between the two governments.Amid this meeting, Ms Ferguson said the “media operation will be tightly controlled” for those in the DUP.“It remains to be seen whether Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly of the DUP will take questions because last week, the DUP were at a very tightly-controlled press conference with only selected media outlets invited,” she said.Ms Ferguson also noted this will be outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s last official outing as leader of the country before handing the reins to Simon Harris.“It will also be the first time North South Ministerial Council has been in Armagh since 2016,” she said. “Back when Enda Kenny, Baroness Arlene Foster and the late Martin McGuinness were running the show.”It is expected ministers today will discuss business, shared infrastructure and cooperation between the two states on the island.#politics #newstalk #ireland ___________________________________________________________________________📱 Have you downloaded the Newstalk app?- Find the app in the Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thisisaim.newstalk&hl=en_IE&gl=US- Find the app via Apple: https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/newstalk-106-108-fm/id372643826#️⃣ SUBSCRIBE to the Newstalk social channels:- YOUTUBE | youtube.com/@Newstalkfm – TWITTER | twitter.com/newstalkfm- INSTAGRAM | instagram.com/newstalkfm/- FACEBOOK | facebook.com/newstalkfm- WEBSITE | https://www.newstalk.com/🎧 PODCAST – listen at your leisure: newstalk.com/podcasts- iTunes: search for Newstalk in your app!- Spotify: search for Newstalk for our latest pods and news- Or wherever you get your podcasts!📱GET IN TOUCH WITH NEWSTALK- WhatsApp: get in touch on 0871400106

Ireland needs to have ‘pan-European defence conversation’ – MacNeill [Video]

Ireland needs to have a conversation ‘nobody particularly wants’ about European defence, the newly-appointed European Affairs Minister has said.Jennifer Carroll MacNeill was moved into the role from Financial Services in yesterday’s Cabinet reshuffle by Taoiseach Simon Harris. That came after her predecessor in the role, Peter Burke was promoted to the position of Minister for Enterprise. She told Newstalk Breakfast it is a challenging time.”I think it’s a very serious time in Europe, there are a lot of different challenges with Palestine most importantly – what Ireland is trying to do to recognise the State of Palestine,” she said.”What we’re doing in relation to Ukraine and trying to rearm Ukraine and the support for Ukraine and the concerns that our friends in Nordic-Baltic countries have around further Russian aggression”.During his final speech as Taoiseach yesterday, Leo Varadkar raised the question of Irish neutrality – and warned that Ireland must be prepared for a military attack on the EU.Asked what Ireland’s position would be if another EU state was attacked, Minister MacNeill said we have existing support roles with NATO and the EU.”There’s a broader pan-European conversation about how to coordinate defence spending, how to coordinate defence operations and procurement and what that’s going to look like over time,” she said.”Nobody particularly wants to have that conversation but there is a different geopolitical reality on the European continent, as there is a different geo-political instability between Israel-Palestine, the Straits of Taiwan.”It is something that we are going to have consider in more detail here and probably have… a more ongoing conversation about watching what’s happening in the rest of Europe”.________________________________________________________________________________________________📱 Have you downloaded the Newstalk app?- Find the app in the Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thisisaim.newstalk&hl=en_IE&gl=US- Find the app via Apple: https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/newstalk-106-108-fm/id372643826#️⃣ SUBSCRIBE to the Newstalk social channels:- YOUTUBE | youtube.com/@Newstalkfm – TWITTER | twitter.com/newstalkfm- INSTAGRAM | instagram.com/newstalkfm/- FACEBOOK | facebook.com/newstalkfm- WEBSITE | https://www.newstalk.com/🎧 PODCAST – listen at your leisure: newstalk.com/podcasts- iTunes: search for Newstalk in your app!- Spotify: search for Newstalk for our latest pods and news- Or wherever you get your podcasts!📱GET IN TOUCH WITH NEWSTALK- WhatsApp: get in touch on 0871400106

Ireland PM Announces “Shocking” Resignation After Urging Biden To “Stop Bombing Gaza” | Watch [Video]

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announces an unexpected resignation, citing both personal and political reasons without providing further details. Varadkar declared his stepping down with an emotional speech, suggesting that a new leader would be better to lead his party and country. Speculations abound across Europe following this unprecedented move, which comes just days after Varadkar delivered a moving speech in the White House urging President Biden to “stop bombing Gaza” from both sides. The surprise resignation has caused a political earthquake across Europe as Ireland prepares for upcoming European Parliament elections within 10 weeks and a general election within the country expected to be held within a year. Varadkar has asked the party to choose a new prime minister on April 6. In 2017, Varadkar made history by becoming Ireland’s first gay, biracial, and youngest prime minister. The Dublin Commerce Chamber applauded his role in leading Ireland’s post-COVID recovery.#leovaradkar #biden #gaza Subscribe to The Times of India’s YouTube channel: http://goo.gl/WgIatuFor daily news & updates and exclusive stories, follow the Times of IndiaFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/TimesofIndiaInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/timesofindia/Download the app: http://toi.in/3SLUCa80Follow the TOI WhatsApp channel: https://bit.ly/3RYl0J9Follow TOI+ for well-researched and in-depth news and analysisFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/timesofindiaplusTwitter:https://twitter.com/TOIPlusInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/toi_plus/

Leo Varadkar delivers emotional speech as he resigns as Ireland’s taoiseach [Video]

Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube http://bit.ly/guardianwiressubVaradkar announced the surprise move at a press conference in Dublin on Wednesday. He said his reasons were ‘both personal and political’, and that the next taoiseach would have two months to prepare for local and European elections in June, and up to a year in office before the next general election.
