Note: the video above contains the sounds of gunshots. The Maine Attorney General’s office has named the eleven officers who used deadly force during the shootout with a suspect in Paris Monday morning. Per state law, the following law enforcement officers are required to be put on administrative leave following the incident. The Attorney General’s office clarified that other officers may have been at the scene when shots were fired, but only those named are believed to have used deadly force. Maine State Police:Sgt. Paris Police Chief Michael Dailey was not among the list of those who used deadly force, though his cruiser was the first law enforcement vehicle allegedly stolen by the suspect, Gary Porter. At the time, Dailey was trying to bring Porter into the Oxford County Jail, following his arrest on an outstanding felony theft warrant in Paris Monday morning. While trying to get him out of the police vehicle at the jail, Porter was allegedly able to slip his cuffs from behind his back to his front. Officials say Porter managed to get into the driver’s seat and threw Dailey from the moving vehicle in the process of escaping.Several more agencies responded to chase Porter down before he crashed along Route 117. The eleven listed above are then reported to have exchanged gunfire with Porter, though it remains unclear where Porter got the weapon allegedly used. “We heard a gunshot, I think, from him. I’m not quite sure it sounded like it was from him and then all the police officers returned fire,” Linda Marie Mercer told Maine’s Total Coverage after witnessing the shooting. No officers were hurt in the incident. Porter was hit by gunfire but managed to drive off in another stolen vehicle, this time belonging to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say Porter crashed again and was taken into custody. Porter now faces two counts of theft, assaulting a police officer, escape, eluding an officer and violating bail conditions. The Major Crimes Unit from Maine State Police are now investigating his alleged crimes. The Attorney General’s office continues to investigate the use of deadly force, per standard procedure.
