Coronation Street fans have once again voiced their disdain over the show’s persistent dark storylines, after another two were announced over the weekend.

The long-running ITV soap has received criticism from fans, who have repeatedly blasted the show for the shocking amount of unsettling, dark and crime-centric stories over the past year or two.

Corrie is no stranger to issue-led storylines or even tackling darker subject matter but this past two years has seen an increased focus on such stories, with little to no humour to balance it out.

The trials and tribulations of dodgy Damon Hay and the suspected murder of Lauren Bolton are two recent examples of the show’s penchant for darker material, in addition to the year-long killing spree of Stephen Reid, which concluded in October after the serial murderer claimed three lives.
