Britons could vote to re-join the European Union in 2040 in a referendum to reverse Brexit. The bombshell prediction comes from Sir John Curtice, a top political scientist and polling guru.
Sir John, a professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde and a well-respected pollster in Westminster, made the stunning claim during a talk at the UK in a Changing Europe research group this week.
The eminent political scientist pointed to the overwhelmingly anti-Brexit views of Labour voters and younger generations as proof that the issue was not settled for future generations.
He told the thinktank: “I think the 2016 referendum is going to be as unsuccessful as the 1975 one.”
Britons voted to join the European Communities – a progenitor to the EU – in the 1970s referendum.
Sir John predicted that Britain could be back in the bloc within 16 years, saying: “I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens before 2040.”
