Labour have secured victory in the Blackpool South by-election and made early gains in the local election results by inflicting a series of defeats on the Conservatives.
The constituency was previously held by ex-Conservative MP Scott Benton who resigned following a sting operation when he was caught offering to break lobbying rules.
Labour candidate Chris Webb was declared the winner just before 5am and used his victory speech to call for a general election.
